Fresh coat of paint for fresh food restaurant Cafe del Mar

Painting and Decorating students at West Suffolk College have been carrying out an ambitious work experience project at a new restaurant, Cafe del Mar, in St John’s Street, Bury St Edmunds.

Thirty three Level 2 and Level 3 students have been covering bright purple paintwork on the interior and exterior of the building, replacing it with navy and stone.

Lecturer Dean Smith said: “The students have had to create resource lists and specification sheets and carry out risk assessments just as they would in the real world, and must adhere to all site rules.”

The new colour scheme reflects a change of ownership. Previously a vegetarian restaurant, the new business will offer Mediterranean style cuisine, including vegetarian dishes but also featuring the best of locally available meat and fish.

Proprietor Maria Crick said: "I am delighted with the students’ progress, their positive and professional approach to a real business environment is very encouraging.”

Maria will also be taking on two Apprentices in Professional Catering and Hospitality Services through the College.
